Inteco three years ago was an infant of an idea. I wanted women to have access to sanitary pads. Why? Because it was a basic right. At that time I did not see it as something extra ordinary. I still do not consider my business “innovative” or “unique”. I am ensuring a basic need for a woman is met. Women should be able to access sanitary pads. That is the basic standard for any woman who has hit puberty. So what I do is not extraordinary.
This sentiment has pushed me. That and the need to serve others. It is in my core. I believe our sole purpose as humans is to ease the burden of suffering of others. I sat back a couple of days ago and wondered how I could translate that to Inteco. Inteco in all rights is a legal entity, an artificial human if you like. Therefore, should it also do good? Shouldn’t we hold it accountable for it is a basic “human” requirement?
In my opinion corporations have lost it. They sit behind their desks, sign a big check, call the media for the hand over ceremony and disappear into the horizon. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an excuse to get publicity and make the people at the top feel good about themselves. Would I let Inteco be clustered in this category? Not even when I am dead and gone. Very few companies do good without analysing their ROI. It is a sad reality.
The introduction of our sexual reproductive health program was the solution to the dilemma that I had. I did not want to do good on the side. I did not want it to be an after thought. I did not want to view women as potential money bags. They had problems that needed to be addressed some of them been inadequate training on sexual reproductive health, puberty education and Menstrual health management.
The idea was born as a humble thought. I knew how confused I was when I went through puberty. I knew I was not unique. There are girls who do not know what they are going through and thus I wanted to help them. It has now turned to a feverish passion. This is how Inteco will serve the community. This has led to other programs been discussed like our volunteer and internship program both still at infancy stage. Both been tailored to help young individuals advance in their lives.
You might be wondering why do good? Why structure a company that its culture is based around serving others? That is the responsibility of the community isn’t it? I shall answer you with this, aren’t you, your business, your employees, your suppliers, your customers and partners members of the said community? Shouldn’t you all then including the legal “human” do good?
Until next time,
