Make me an entrepreneur!!!
Entrepreneurship is not something you go to the shop and purchase. You cannot go to the bar and ask for a shot of entrepreneurship on the rocks. Somehow though the world thinks that is exactly how one should start a business. Simply having a vague idea is not enough to sustain a business and when you fail you say the Muniras of this world were lucky. You start saying her success was due to her connections and her networks. You will say she knows the right people. Maybe you are right. I might know the right people. I might have opportunities that you would never have. I may have been born in the right family. All these could be factors that contributed to my success.
I have been getting requests along the these lines: I want to stop been unemployed. I want to start a business. I want to stop filling the pockets of others. All very very valid reasons. However, none of them are business ideas. The prerequisite of been an entrepreneur is the ability to identify and if you are really good anticipate a need of the market you want to target.
For the first few however many years entrepreneurship is not what you do. It is who you are. You must be allowed to be consumed by your idea. You are the only visionary of the idea. You are the only who sees the clear picture. You will be faced by people who have not seen the vision and thus think you are a mad man. No one appreciates an unfinished painting people only see the beauty after it is done. The artist is the only one with the full picture. You are that lonely artist.
You must be ready to accept isolation. The friends you had so much in common with will appear shallow. Their problems will not be as grande as yours. You are solving the world’s problems while they are thinking of where to get drunk. You are not going to relate. It will be too much effort to keep up a conversation so you will not bother. Before, you know it you are alone. You will shed off things you liked to do because it is a waste of time. You will want to continuously want to work on your business. Soon that is all you will be.
Before we even begin talking if you are an entrepreneur or not. You must have drive. Drive within yourself more than anything else. In my journey I have come to know the definition of faith: The sheer belief of something you cannot see. You must believe beyond logic that whatever you are doing is worth it. Not for you but, for others. It should add value to the people you are targeting. It is not about you. You are not the product nor the service. Business in its simplest form is the ability to offer a service or a product to a select market profitably.
In other words “make me an entrepreneur” is not enough. You cannot simply just want it. You must be emotionally ready to go through the journey and do that work. That what separates success from statistics. It is not the opportunities been offered even though it is a good advantage you will not do anything if you are not willing to work for it.
I did a how to start a business series a while back Links are below. There are some changes of opinion on some subject matters but, a lot of the theories are still true.
Until next time,
