I feel like a broken [insert appropriate audio player type here] but, there is so much going on that it is quite overwhelming. Therefore, I must share this wonderful milestone before it is over taken by events. WE HIRED!!! Yes, Inteco is no longer a one woman show!!I know!! I know!! I am also quite excited.
We hired our very first employee last month. She is an absolute gem. I am truly lucky to have found someone like her at my very first attempt. Between me and you I did not know what I was doing. Thus, I used my networks to get someone reliable and trustworthy. She was recommended by a friend and that to me at the time was enough.
I am still learning what type of boss I am and once I have figured that out I will definitely over share.
As usual here are my tips and lessons learned:
HIRE SLOW FIRE FAST
- HSFF – basically Hire Slow Fire Fast. I learned this in a class I had taken on growth. (post on that soon) and they advised to take time to hire someone so that you know exactly what you are looking for and fire when they are not working for you. Why? Well you may rush into hiring someone when you did not have to. I decided to hire because I could not be on location, work on proposals and follow up people all at once.
- Ask questions.I did not. You should have heard me “interviewing” her. I was so impressed she had kept time it over shadowed everything else. Do not do this.
- Know why you are hiring. I have touched on this briefly above but let me expound further. You need to know what your weak links are to help you fill in the gaps. It also helps you identify what skills to look for.
- Look for someone you can train. This maybe business specific but the reason I did not care for my employee’s qualifications was because I need someone who could work for little money, understood that there is great potential to grow and believes in what Inteco is about. She satisfied those needs.
We are expanding even more so that is something to stick around for.
Until next time.
