One day when I was checking up on the machine a lady approached me. She was quite interested in what I was doing and how young I was. She requested an interview and I accepted. It happened right then and there. To be honest I was nowhere prepared for that. However, I went along with it. She is a pleasant woman so it was quite easy to discuss matters concerning Inteco.
After that encounter a few weeks passed before she sent me an article for approval. I was quite excited about my first article ever. As I read the article my excitement turned into panic. I had told her WAY more than I should have revealed. I revealed information that would kill Inteco as soon as it was published. Even if Inteco survived it would have been haunted by this article for all eternity. Some people would have blamed the lady but, I blamed myself. I did not filter information. I did not think about the image of Inteco or if I was adding or reducing value to it.
As usual here are my lesson learned
- All that you say or do must CREATE VALUE to your business. It is detrimental to the success of the business. I was lucky that she was kind enough to let me see it before she submitted it. I would not have been so privileged.
- Take into consideration what you are saying. I was very genuine in my interview. However, if someone was to take snippets of that article they could easily twist it to mean something negative.
- Have a brand communication strategy. (I shall delve deeper into this at a later time). It is simply a tool to assist in communicating brand values to the public. It includes what you are associated with and what you are not. This precise strategy enables you to think of what you put out there and if it is in line with the strategy.
- Be proactive, deliberate and literal. I could not approve the article thus, I wrote another one. This new version had purpose it was not about me but about Inteco. This is why corporates have a communication team where all information is from that branch of the business. Writing the article on my own helped me realize what I wanted you to know about Inteco. I only knew this by seeing what I did not what out there.
Until next time
