As the key chain initiative was going extremely well I was faced with the challenge of expanding my market. I had exhausted my network and my network’s networks. Thus, I decided to venture out to strangers.
My door to door sales experience was not that traumatic to be honest. My neighbors (some of whom I had never seen) were very ready to support a young lady. Some were very surprised to see my determination and zeal. Due to this some bought for the sake of buying just to support me.
Even if my experience was not THAT traumatic it was fairly hard. My friend and I decided to hawk in the streets of Nairobi. You are all very extremely busy people to stop!! What does a girl have to do to make you stop? When we decided to hawk we could not even get a chance to say hello before someone walked off. Kenyans, you walk extremely fast. We tried the hawking thing for a good thirty minutes. I know!! I know!! That was some commitment on our part but, we knew it was not going to work out.
That experience and having the odd neighbor ignoring me made me realize just how hard these door to door sales people have it. I am not saying I shall buy everything they offer me BUT, I have deep appreciation for their work now.
